Gracie Yet to Debut?

The first female of the Gracie family signed recently to fight for EMMA. Many fans of the MMA, the Gracie family and hot women alone, have long awaited Kyra Gracie's MMA debut. With the recent announcement of EMMA's Women's Bantamweight Grand Prix, we thought we might see Kyra's name on the card. Kyra fought at around 135 pounds in her ADCC and BJJ tournaments. Alas, still no Kyra in MMA. Her website announced the EMMA signing but both Kyra's official site and the people of EMMA have yet to announce an opponent or a date for her debut. We thought, or maybe had our hopes up that Kyra would follow in Royce's footsteps and throw he name into the Grand Prix mix. At the very least we expected to see Kyra as a big name on the card, like EMMA has done recently with fellow celebrity names, Shaq and former WWE wrestler Dave Butista. Still no word yet on Gracie debut though. Maybe we'll still get to see her in the 145 or 125 pound women's GP.

Fishing for Fighters in a UFC Dominated World

The heavily financed and television backed, Empire Mixed Martial Arts has been making waves on the MMA scene since they announced themselves as the world's newest MMA promotion just a few short months ago. The CEO for EMMA clearly stated that they had every intention of signing every top fighter available, meaning not under a Zuffa contract. EMMA immediately began signing the top talent of Japan including fighters from the recently defunct DREAM promotion. Many fighters were also "stolen" from perennial newcomer OneFC, who aren't known to sign exclusive contracts. The biggest shock of all came when EMMA purchased BellatorFC right out from under their new owner Viacom and SpikeTV who planned to replace the UFC with Bellator programming. So far EMMA seems to be holding onto their word, having signed the biggest names and top rising stars not under a Zuffa (UFC/Strikeforce) contract.

What does that really leave EMMA though? The UFC and Strikeforce have all but 3 of the top 10 fighters in each of MMA's top 7 weight divisions as ranked by Sherdog.com. This leaves only Ben Askren, Michael Chandler and Pat Curran under EMMA contract. EMMA did their part in contacting those few big names that aren't too friendly with the UFC and some recently retired fighters including, Fedor Emelianenko, Tito Ortiz, Mirko CroCop, Frank Shamrock, Jason Miller and Matt Lindland. EMMA released today that their contract negotiations with Emelianenko, Ortiz and Shamrock have fallen through. The statement said, "If Fedor, Tito or Frank ever return to MMA we at EMMA will be very surprised. We did everything in our power to convince the top names out there to come back but none of those men were interested in a return to MMA at this time. Believe me, we've left no source untapped and money never became an option for any of these guys. We our proud that Mirko CroCop will be returning to MMA with us early next year. Mirko still has the desire to compete, especially in a return to a MMA Grand Prix. We're also pleased to announce that Matt Lindland will be competing in our Middleweight Grand Prix. This will be Matt's farewell tour in MMA. We're proud to provide this MMA legend with a proper stage to retire on and we wish the Olympic Silver Medalist the best of luck in retiring with some EMMA gold around his waist."

Zuffa's leftovers may not seem like much to casual UFC fans, but to those who seek MMA elsewhere, EMMA is bringing the best in the world into what's shaping up to be the world's second largest MMA promotion and the closest thing the UFC has had to competition since they purchased Strikeforce. So unless the UFC has plans to purchased yet another competitor or if EMMA fails victim to the same fates that closed EliteXC, Affliction and PrideFC then we may be witnessing the rise of something great here.

Eddie Alvarez Pursues UFC

Former Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez had announced that he will not be signing with the new EMMA promotion. Before EmpireTV purchased Bellator from Viacom, Eddie Alvarez had planned to fulfill his Bellator contract (which he did in October) and pursue a career with the UFC. After Bellator was purchased and essentially closed at this seasons end it, was unclear if Alvarez would continue with his original plans or to sign with the new company EMMA which has been making waves since their inception. Alvarez answered those questions today when he stated he would not be signing with EMMA. This is good news for fans of the UFC, as the UFC in all likelihood will be adding the former Bellator Lightweight champion to their roster. For fans hoping to see Eddie Alvarez return to a Grand Prix format, they will not be getting it in EMMA's Lightweight Grand Prix next year.
We contacted EMMA personal about Alvarez leaving and they confirmed what Alvarez had said. They included, "We wish Eddie the best of luck. He's been one of the best lightweights in the sport since his first lightweight fight back in '08. He deserves to be fighting for a top promotion."
Chalk a win for the UFC who are seemingly in the final stages of the signing process with Alvarez. There may be a little buzz about the ambitious 15 Grand Prix's the new company is holding in their first season but it's clear that the UFC is still the elephant in the room. And the elephant still gets what it wants.

Ronda Rousey not the Only Female Olympian in MMA

On the cusp of Empire Mixed Martial Arts premier, we're taking a look at an Olympic Silver Medalist scheduled to fight on one of EMMA's upcoming cards. No we're not talking about fellow Silver Medalist Matt Lindland. EMMA is also under contract with Sara McMann, a Silver Medal in the 2004 Olympics. A lot of attention has been drawn to women's MMA recently because of Strikeforce fighter and Olympic Judo Gold Medalist Ronda Rousey. McMann has yet to receive the attention Rousey has garnered. Like Rousey, McMann is a six fight MMA veteran in the 135 pound division. McMann may not have captured gold in the Olympics but she is the only American female to ever medal in Olympic Freestyle Wrestling. Rousey may get all the attention but McMann has been just as impressive for such a new mixed martial artist since her debut just over a year ago. We may someday see the world's two most accomplished women of MMA do battle but until then we'll have to settle for Rousey competing in Strikeforce's bare 135 pound Women's division and McMann going for gold once again, this time in EMMA's 135 pound Women's Grand Prix.

Arlovski, CroCop, Rizzo & Others not to Appear in EMMA's Heavyweight Tournament

A day out from unveiling their upcoming Heavyweight Grand Prix, officials for EMMA told the press today that Andrei Arlovski, Mirko CroCop, Pedro Rizzo and several other top names in the promotions will not be on their upcoming Heavyweight Grand Prix. Insiders expected to see these big names on EMMA's next unveiling. The officials today said that we could instead expect to see those names in the Cruiserweight (206-225 pound) card. EMMA stated a long time ago that they planned to split the normal Heavyweight division (206-265 pounds) into two different divisions but it was unclear who would be fighting where. When confronted about splitting one of MMA's shallowest divisions in two, EMMA's CEO went on a rant about how fighters like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira shouldn't have to fight "muscle injected monsters" like Frank Mir. This was a controversial comment hinting at steroid usage. EMMA CEO went on to state, "It's a travesty that in modern day mixed martial arts we make fighters up to 60 pounds in weight difference fight each other because a division is shallow. I promise you Frank Mir's blackbelt couldn't hold up Nogueira's gee regardless of what Joe Rogan said. What happened in that fight was a 10nth grader picking on a 5th grader. He held Nogueira down because he was bigger and stronger and he broke the legends arm. Adding a Cruiserweight division, weak in depth or not, will prevent another travesty like that from happening whether, critics, fans, fighters, commentators or the UFC like it, think it's right or not. We at EMMA are committed to our Cruiserweight division. It'll be a much needed separation between Heavyweight size fighters and monsters barely able to make the division. It's also a gateway for some fighters to transition to Lightweight. It's where fighters like, Mirko CroCop and Pedro Rizzo should have been fighting their whole career."
Splitting there Heavyweights into two divisions may not give us quite the fight card we were hoping for but it will leave us with two cards that we still want to see. EMMA is scheduled to release their 6th fight card, a Heavyweight Grand Prix tomorrow.

No soul can pass into Heaven without first paying for it's sins. We are all sinners.

The Afterlife doesn't begin until we die so every episode of this new EmpireTV drama begins with a death. From a torture chamber in Hell the person's soul is made to relive every sin they committed in life before they pass through Judgement. Torture appropriate for your sins is set and must be paid before Heaven allows you into it's gates. Everyone pays for their sins. Some for their everlasting afterlife.

"It's Hellraiser meets Six Feet Under!"

"If when we die, we're judged by Demons from Hell before we're aloud to pass onto Heaven or Hell then this is the best reality show ever! lol"

Santiago Out of Middleweight Grand Prix

Jorge Santiago has pulled out of EMMA's Middleweight Grand Prix. Before signing with EMMA just a few months ago, Santiago had stated his intentions of moving to Welterweight (170 pounds). A big Middleweight, Santiago opted to enter the 185 pound Grand Prix when he signed with the company instead. Now he's decided to follow through on his original plans to drop to 170. EMMA had just announced their Middleweight Grand Prix a week ago. Santiago's change of mind has left his new organization to shuffle their Middleweight GP around. Jorge was set to fight 6'6" Kendall Grove in the main event of the card.
It appears Jorge will still be competing in an EMMA Grand Prix next year but at 170 pounds instead. His announcement to withdraw from the card has left EMMA without a main event. Apparently this decision is in agreement with EMMA officials. EMMA has shown a dedication to fighters fighting in proper weight classes. So much so that they added a Cruiserweight (206-225 pound) division splitting up the 60 pound Heavyweight variance. A spokesman for the organization has stated that the reshuffled fight card will be announced in the upcoming days. The just released fight posters for the event has all already been recalled and edited, removing Santiago from the poster. We'll keep you up to date as more information is released.
